Join us an inspection volunteer

Last updated: 27 March 2026

We inspect care and social work services to make sure they are high quality and meet the needs of people who use them. We believe we can make care better by working with people who have personal experience of using care services, either themselves or through supporting a loved one.

An inspection volunteer is a trained volunteer who supports our inspectors during inspections. We provide our volunteers with dedicated training and equipment to ensure they feel confident and prepared for the role.

They speak directly with people who experience care, bringing their lived experience and insights into the inspection process.

Please note: the inspection volunteer role is not for people who work in care services. If you work in care and also have personal experience of someone who uses a care service, please contact us and we will discuss this further with you.

Frequently asked questions

We ask inspection volunteers to take part in at least six inspections a year. Each inspection usually lasts for one day.

You’ll also be invited to take part in induction training. This is over held over three days, and is a mixture of face to face and online sessions.

You may also be asked to attend group meetings and one-to-one support meetings, which are scheduled flexibly to suit your availability.

No, it won’t cost you anything to volunteer with us. We cover all your expenses, including travel from wherever you live in Scotland.

If you need more information or would like to chat to someone about becoming an inspection volunteer, please email our participation team.
